Nordic stuff rules!

1. The Sugarcubes, are planning a reunion performance in Reykjavík, Iceland on November 17, 2006! The concert celebrates the 20th anniversary of Bad Taste Records (Smekkleysa), the Icelandic record label created by members of the band. All of the original band members will be playing, including international superstar, Björk! 2. Nordic Lounge Weekend album was realeased, this extraordinary compilation extracts the most relaxing grooves from the Nordic region, after compilations like Nordic Lounge 1 and 2, both of them masterpieces. Trust me, this one is not an exception, get them all. 3. Recently I discovered Plej's myspace page, he is a brilliant musician and producer from Sweden, in fact some of his tunes are in Nordic Lounge 1 and 2. His debut album "Electronic Music from the Swedish Leftcoast" is, in my opinion, a jewel of electronic music because he fusioned some of the finest house with jazzy atmospheres, this mix sounds truly elegant... anyway his myspace page annouced the release of the new album, certainly I'm longing to get it on my hands. 4. Hanne Hukkelgerg has also made her second album in Propeller studio. It is named "Rykestrasse 68" after her half year living in Berlin. The album is truly amazing. A more orchestral and cinematic sound unfolds new sides of Hanne's beautiful voice. All songs are written by Hanne except the dark version of Pixies "Break My Body" featuring Daniel Warg Sanden on nyckel-harp. Rykestrasse 68 is out in Norway and itunes store only!

Our selection for album of the month this time is Sabrina Malheiros’ Vibrasons, this magnificent album is an excellent collection of remixes of her songs. Sabrina is an outstanding brazilian singer who has a vast heritage beacause of Alex Malheiros, her father, who is a bass player from the legendary Brazilian band Azymuth. Her grandfather played with Sergio Mendes and was the first Brazilian to manufacture an electric bass, she also studied music when she was 6 years old, and by the time she was 12, she had made her recording debut singing lead vocals on the title track of Azymuth's 1991 album, Curumim! All this knowledge and effort has given her the possibility to work with great artists, like the japanese Acid Jazz act United Future Organization when she was just 19, after that she recorded 4 songs for a movie soundtrack included there was the highly successful track, Dancing in Rio with Paulo Williams. On her debut album Equilibria the sound contains mainly Brazilian sambas and bossas, all the melodies and rythms reflect in some way a little piece of the musical roots of Brazil but at the same time sounds contemporary and elegant, this extraordinary album was so great that it was screaming for for a remix, so some great artists and producers were involved in creating incredible remixes, people like: Kenny Dope, Quantic, Nicola Conte, Boston Rodríguez, Max Cole, Spiritual South and many more, therefore it is not a collection for DJ's beacuse there are too much styles and tempos each one of them contributing with their personal trademark, and also compiling Sabrina's tracks to build up an ultra-rhythmic and sophisticated compendium. Sabrina explains, "Vibrasons is a play on words, it's a combination of Vibração (vibrations) and Sons (sounds). I love all the remixes as they breathe new life into the tracks."

Smart and gloomy indie pop comes out from Bangalore, the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka, the project 777, led by singer/songwriter Kamal Singh (with some help from Swaroop & Abhi), doesn't have a discography yet, but you can start listening to its soft, rich, and well composed tracks and hope they release an album soon. Using mellow lyrics of despair, Singh introduces himself to us and for this reason he was awarded Songwriter of the Year at the Freedom Jam 2004, a festival that focuses on original material and welcomes all styles of music.

Suba, are you sleeping?

I want to share an incredible story here, about how music has this outstanding power in such a way that it can turn a life around in a dramatic way. This story is about Mitar Subotic a.k.a Suba wich was a serbian-born musician an composer who definitely open a new world on how electronic music could be fluid and organic, but at the same time rhytmic and futuristic. I'm going to resume some of the most imporant facts of a document written by Brazzil Magazine a long time ago, keep reading for the brief version or you can read the detailed document here. Suba grew up in a home where both parents were jouranlist. His father, a well known TV journalist receveid the Villa Lobos Award for promotion of Brazilian culture, hence Suba early ties with Brazil, in addition Suba's childhood was full of music studies, from music theory to orchestation. He moved to Paris in 1986 where he composed music for theater, ballet, elite fashion shows, film and television, one of his electronic pieces that was based on Yugosalvian folk lullabies, In the Mooncage, received the international Fund for Promotion of Culture award from UNESCO, which included a three month scholarship to research indigenous music and Afro-Brazilian rhythms. After his scolarship, he stayed totally in love with Brazil and their people, a year later he made good friends with some of the the most respected musicians and singers in Brazil: João Parahyba, Cibelle Cavalli, and Katia B, he shared with them his uncovencional way to create music, they then created a perfect complement. They composed tracks such as Sereia, Você Gosta, Tantos Desejos to merge on Suba's debut album São Paulo Confessions which is a masterpiece. He had planned to travel to Belgium on November 3rd, 1999, to promote São Paulo Confessions unfortunately the night of November 2nd, 1999, some smoke was detected coming from Suba's appartment, in fact the building custodian called him through the intercom, and Suba who had been sleeping told him that he was unable to open his door. The custodian battered down the door and found Suba on his feet, very disoriented, inside the burning studio, later he died from smoke asphyxiation. It appears that Suba reentered to his studio, his friends believe, he was going to recover a small case containing the original audio files and backups for the then new Bebel Gilberto album Tanto Tempo that was in the final stage of production. I think Suba's work goes beyond his studio and that he created a new path for musicians in Brazil, In conclution I believe that this story is not a sad story after all, as Suba said sometime "Life can be understood backwards; but it most be lived fowards" and yes, Suba is deeply sleeping inside everyone of us. Glass Harp: Instrument of the month

This relatively easy to make instrument consists of several glasses of different sizes mounted upright on a wooden base, the sound is produced by moving wet fingers along the rims of glass bowls, the glasses are arranged in rows to make chords easier to play. Quantic - An Announcement To Answer

Despite being just 23 years old, Will Holland started his career as a young producer and musician, he already had 2 records full of funk and jazz influences "Mishaps Happening" and "Pushin' On" these ones rapidly became part of the BBC stations tracklists. In order to make his sound so rich and inventive he tries to be very close to his music, in some cases he plays guitar, bass and sax, so he is definetly a one-man orchestra. For his last creating effort he started a journey with just with a laptop and a very strongly defined concept, he went all the way to San Juan in Puerto Rico, Nigeria, Benin, Ghana and Ethiopia to collect samples, instrument sounds and voices. Among the guests included in his album are Noelle Scaggs from The Rebirth, Ohmega Watts and the Puerto Rican percussionist Tempo, which was a member of the marvelous Fania All-Stars. The result is a multiflavored record; every track has its own personality, but at the same time it sounds as a part of a whole, in my opinion this is very hard to obtain within an album, maybe that's the main reason that it was chosen as album of the month. After hearing some tracks, it came to my mind the belgian producer Buscemi, maybe because Buscemi and Quantic dare to explore those hidden roots of African music. And, by the way, if you look at the dictionary you will find that Quantic means: "a homogenous polynomial having two or more variables" this definition works very accurately to define this album. I hope you enjoy this album as much as I do.

A Good-Looking Sound

Ernst Chladni (1756-1827) made several experiments with sound and acoustics and he showed the effects of internal harmonic vibrations by spreading fine sand over metal plates or glass and making them vibrate by scraping the bow of a violin along the edges of the plates, this resulted in symmetrical patterns of nodal lines, according to the frequency of the vibration you can see variations in the resulting patterns. These experiments lead Hans Jenny (1904-1972) to coin the term Cymatics, which is the study of wave phenomena. This is typically associated with the patterns produced through the interaction of sound waves in a medium.

Austin TV

Austin TV, One of the most hardworking and self-promoting bands of the mexican indie community was formed in 2001 by Chato who plays guitar, Chavo who also plays guitar, Pasa on the bass, and Xna Yer playing drums and Kaoss pad, later Chio San joined the band by playing samplers and synthetizers. Their music is a fresh amalgam of progressive psychedelia, heavy sounds and dream pop, all these following a totally-instrumental policy, influenced by bands like Sigur Rós, Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins, Yo La Tengo or even That Dog. On September of 2002 they released their five track-EP entitled Austin TV, the EP's only vocal sounds are samples of Alejandro Jodorowsky's "Fando y Lis" and Richard Linklater's "SubUrbia" showing us their intense love for movies. On November of 2003 they delivered their first album: La Última Noche Del Mundo (The Last Night Of The World), this 8 track LP consolidated them as a powerful band, the music here is great, especially the sublime "Ella No Me Conoce" (She Doesn't Know Me). Next year, on March, Pasa left the band to concentrate in his career, and Ratón took his place on bass. On August 2004 they compiled and issued a limited edition album of B-sides and live tracks with the name of Asrael, the album quickly went out-of-stock, and it is now a rarity. Along these releases they've participated in several movie soundtracks including: "Más Que a Nada en el Mundo", "Temporada de Patos" and "American Visa" among others. Their latest release is a free DVD of a live acoustic show recorded on the winter of 2005 at IMER studios in Mexico City, the DVD Temblaban Con Sonata Solitaria (They Trembled With Solitary Sonata) was directed by Project Mayhem and sponsored by Vans, it contains 9 finely achieved acoustic performances by this outstanding DIY-band, whose future looks bright and very promising. I've recently discovered this awesome record label which instantly turned into one of my favorites, because they promote some of the best unheard music and a bunch of very talented artists from around the globe. Their store opened in early 1990 in San Francisco, California, being a small shop, soon a lot of CD collectors, DJ's, musicians and producers found this place filled with the ultimate tunes on jazz, funk, breakbeats and hip-hop. One of the coolest advantages over other record labels is the fact that all artists in Ubiquity Records have complete autonomy of their work, in addition Ubiquity's formula is quite simple: "We put music that we love". Herbert-Scale

Mathew Herbert is one of the most versatile and innovative musicians in the United Kingdom, he has contributed to the works of artists like Björk, R.E.M., Róisín Murphy, Yoko Ono and Serge Gainsbourg, he has also created a technique named P.C.C.O.M. (his "Personal Contract for the Composition Of Music" that incorporates "The Manifesto of Mistakes"), the result of this technique, is awesome, we could say that he dares to be some kind of alchemist, beacuse he achieves a perfect transgression of genres, from a big-band woodwind swing orchestra to subsonic basses that create a fantastic and uncategorized recording, Herbert defines this record as a celebration, and he really made that, we can even compare it with a musical composition by, e.g., Dani Siciliano who usually sings sadder tones of music, and the arrangements create a sweet and energetic atmosphere, almost like pop. In my opinion Scale is one of Herbert's most lucid dreams and, at the same time, a consolidation as a respected icon in the music scene, definitely this album is a masterpiece, not only beacause the arrangements and the production, which is pefectly done, he also renewed musical compositions in a flexible and amusing way. Scale is one of the most expected albums of this year, for that facts is our july album of the month

Vocoder: Instrument of the month

One of our favourite sounds here at Suite303Server is not an instrument in a strict sense. Created in 1940, by the famous Homer Dudley, to break the speech patterns of telephonic communications into smaller components for them to be able to fit a more narrow bandwith, the resulting machine the Voice Coder (hence the name Vocoder) is a sound effect tool that makes the human voice sound synthetic. The synthesized sound that comes through the output of the vocoder preserves the tonal characteristics of the voice that was placed through the input signal, making its characteristic "robotic" sound. I frecuently read Analog Industries, wich is a really cool blog that showcases resources for musicians producers and audio enginners and I found this post very intersting because they make a statement of what could be an ethical development for music production, in other words, with all the huge gamma of software to process digital audio, editing, wiping errors, tunning or even compressing or adding effects, we can say that music today is too perfect and clean? The anwser could be: no, music doesn't mean human-made, it's all about mathematics, maybe in some cases music is raped by their creators, weakening the whole concept just for records sales, I think this dilemma is just the result of globalization, and technification, which doesn't mean that is bad change, is just the fact that music is evolving without our presence in every part of the process, but not a single mathematic equation or any software can compose a lyric of your daily life, or your past lovers :) Tell me what do you think about it?

Aphex Twin is one of the most avant-garde embodiments of electronic music, he started very young exploring and making lots of experimiments with synths, on his childhood Acid House was expanding and consolidating itself as a movement, definetly this influenced his work, but he created his own style, he made electronic music much more organic, dynamic and complex. His music is incorrectly labeled as IDM (which means Intelligent Dance Music), for me, this label was created for those people who can't understand this music, and they simply can't pick up a name for futurity. One of the most popular tracks on his catalogue was Window Licker, this track is a nice sample of how music will be in a few years, or at least I think so, in the meantime check out the video, definitely a masterpiece. We'd announced last March the release of Chosen Lords which is just an extract of the Analord series, a compilation created for vinyl only, I've heard all the tracks recently and I think that AFX is going back to his roots, the saturation of TB 303 (this could be a clue of the 303 that names our blog) and TR 808 are very strong, just like in his first EP named "Analogue Bubblebath", anyway, his new material is based on his huge experience in innovation. He blended genres like Electro, Acid House, and Techno in just one entity. It is simply the best electro album I've ever heard, the combination is almost impossible, morphing something very repetitive into something so organic, for those facts we think that this album deserves the album of the month award.

The story of this french DJ and producer began at the ultra trendy Hotel Costes in the heart of Paris, his debut as a DJ in the lounge area was so successful, that the people started going to the Cafè Costes just to listen to his extraordinary eclectic DJ sets, customers were always very interested in buying a recording from the night they went, so Jean-Louis Costes, the hotel owner, had a brilliant idea: What if we create a compilation with this innovating music? the idea turned out as a hit, the first compilation quickly beacame a global success, after that Stéphane continued the unstoppable production of these compilations, creating 8 volumes of Hotel Costes, all of them delicately selected. After those deliverings he was called for deejaying for important events like Gucci catwalks, Massive Attack's bar, Cannes Film Festival, and many more. But he didn't want to get labeled as a "Lounge DJ", he wanted more, so he started working in the production of his own tracks, in 2003 he released his first album ""Living On The Egde" in which he had great guests, like Michael Stipe of R.E.M., Clèmentine, Cathy Battistessa and many more, from that album I especially love the original Morenito song, which is incredibly well produced. We have to listen to a lot of albums from different genres and styles to select our now traditional album of the month, sometimes it is a very hard process to select just one, I think that one of the most important factors to consider is how this album going to strike the music scene and cause some shock to other artists, this is a very subjective issue beacuse some tracks could be greatly innovative, but we are evaluating the entire album. Recently I've listened to 3 different albums which have a lot in common, the are: Aqua Bassino - Rue De Paris Fantastic Plastic Machine - Imaginations Stereolab - Fab Four Suture What have they in common? Aren't they different in their own style? You may be asking these questions, The answer is yes, they are radically different, but the 3 of them follow the same pattern or the same formula than their previous releases, let's talk about a little bit of each one: Aqua Bassino - Rue De Paris It's a fantastic album for creating a lounge atmosphere because almost all of it is downtempo, just a few tracks are house music in 120 or 125 bpm, It could be said that is incredibly well done, the arregments, the vocals, but it's the same Aqua Bassino's formula, if you know his past albums, you will find the similarities. Fantastic Plastic Machine - Imaginations This Japanese producer and DJ has a huge background exposing new ideas to renew the Japanese scene, Imaginations definitely is great for dancefloors, but I won't compare it with Too (2003) in which every track has a story to tell and a renew way to edit a song, although he invited 3 incredible artists, like Tahiti 80 or Benjamin Diamond, in my own point of view is a quick-made album, therefore, with a lack of imagination, maybe I was expecting more about Fantastic Plastic Machine. StereoLab-Fab Four Suture This one is the most faithful example of how artists could reclycling formulas, aparently Stereolab extract all the essence of their previous releases and put it on Fab Four Suture, they have all the tools to renew themselves, I don't know why they haven't done it, but don't misunderstand me, this album is very cool if you don't know their past works or if you are a Stereolab fan, The formula they always use could be 40% of sweet vocals by Laetitia Sadier, 30% of 60's pyschedelia and 30% of electronic arragments, et voilá: you have a Stereolab album. After their first debut album "La revancha del tango" Gotan Project seeded new concepts and ideas for the rebirth of tango music, combining the melancholy, elegance and folklore of tango with electronic rhythms, to create an accurate combination they went back on time and brought out the huge heritage of Astor Piazolla, and Carlos Gardel which were two of the most important Argentinian composers of XX century. We had to wait two years after Inspiración-Espiración (a remixes album) to recieve Lunático our May album of the month, this album, in comparison with their debut's, is "diferente", just like the name of the single, beacause Lunático explores the most hidden roots of tango music and even the traditional South American music, like candombe, which is an Uruguayan style created entirely for drums, influenced by Africans. Lunático dares to have more freedom and rhytm, in fact the single 'Diferente' is available on vinyl, ready for DJs pleasure; But this album is not entirely for dancefloors, Lunatico has a lot of flavors from rap & tango, to jazzy ballads and fast breakbeats, for doing this amazing fusion they had to be very creative and professional, Gotan Project are now more prepared to show the guidelines of the future, I actually can't wait to listen to their next album.

A 21 string harp-lute from West Africa. It is made by a round bowl covered with a streched material as a resonator, with a notched bridge like the one in a guitar or a lute. The sound has a close resemblance to a harp, but when it's played in the traditional West Africa style, sounds closer to a Flamenco guitar. This one is the second compilation from Wagram Music, unlike the first, this one is a double album, which was a good idea, Nu Jazz, Vol. 2 includes all kinds of moods in jazz music, from smooth lounge atmospheres for having a fancy dinner with your boss, to rhytmic patterns for a crazy dance in your living room, a peculiar thing is a cover of Air with the track All I Need in jazz version which really sounds great, some of the artists included are: Povo, Llorca, St. Germain, Tosca, Matthew Herbert, Jazzanova only to mention some of them, in my opinion the selection is perfectly well picked, in fact I think that the people who create this album compiled some of the most important tracks in nu-jazz style without caring if the the track was old or new. In Summary, beside other jazz compilations, this one try to expose all kinds of shades between traditional jazz and technology, I love these type of combinations, and no mattering the release date (Sep 27, 2005), we thought that is a good recomendation that you should own, and for that is our album of the month. Aphex Twin will do it again

Aphex Twin is set to release a new compilation album this April named 'Chosen Lords'. ‘Chosen Lords’ is partly-inspired by NY electro, Chicago house and Detroit techno classics, but the album also stimulates the kind of "lucid dreaming" atmospherics found on ‘Selected Ambient Works 85-92’, for all this facts i asume that Aphex Twin will do it again changing paradigms of music. As with most Richard D. James releases, it's hard to pin it down to any one genre. Largely recorded on Richard's private collection of analog synthesizers - vintage, modern and home-made, the rhythms, melodies, harmonies, and even some subliminal lyrics have all evolved directly from the machines. Many people try to imitate Richard's sound, but he remains an unrivaled innovator when it comes to the emotional and musical depth and complexity of his tracks. Let me tell you something ironic, Gilles Peterson has a radio show at the BBC named Worlwide, on the last Sunday show Gilles had a really intersting interview with the legend of Brasil 66, Sergio Mendes, he spoke about his colaboration on the Timeless album, you must listen to this, in the interview Gilles Peterson lets us know he's fascinated about Mendes' work, yeah and who won't be? In my opinion definetly the vote of Gilles Peterson IS for Timeless and that makes Mendes' album the winner, I guess that only proves Peterson's passion for exposing new music and ideas, and for that, we repect him.

The weird looking mutantrumpet is a hybrid instrument invented by Ben Neill in the beginning of the 1990's, the electro-acoustic-visual trumpet contains three bells, two sets of valves (that is, six valves instead of three) and a trombone slide. In the mouthpiece there is a pickup that converts the sound to MIDI information, there are also momentary switches next to the valves as well as four MIDI controllers made by pressure sensing pads and potentiometers. It has a computer interface that enables the player to launch and modify sequences, record samples and handle them in real time and it also controls lighting and video or slide projection.

This month the decision for album of the month was very difficult, At the begining of the month I discovered this album by Gilles Peterson - Worldwide Exclusives wich is an extraordinary selection of eclectic music and fine tracks, Gilles Peterson is not exactly a musician, but his excellent taste in music make each of his albums a sort of masterpiece. Today I am impressed with this relovutionary breakbeat album Mild Fantasy Violence, which was created by Himuro, this one is a really good example of what you can do with lots of imagination and freedom, maybe this kind of freedom could be one of the reasons of why Japan is constantly changing parameters in music and everything they do. Nevertheless there's something that I can't understand, Why are they so tight?, They only think about themselves, and they can't always open their frontiers to share their genious. Theremin: Instrument of the month

This is an uncommon instrument that doesn't actually require physical contact in order to produce its eerie sound, invented in 1919 in Russia by Léon Theremin. It is one of the first completely electronic instruments, it consists of circuits in a box and two antennas. It produces its sound by standing in front of it and moving the hands near the two metal antennas, one of which is commonly circular. This amazing book is about music, but with a scientific point of view, according to the author’s theory all music has it own mathematical algorithm, this one is a good example to show these facts, it is a good theory, but in most cases on the examples, it can be compared with compositions created by human beings since it only fulfills the requeriments for the genre. I always think about this intersting issue, but I have developed my own theory and it goes in other direction, I mean, we can understand the algorithm created by music but my question would be: How can human beings assimilate and codify music, depending on what basis or influences? I think if you add more complexity on a melody or a rhythm, people can't assimilate or codify it as good as a simplier one, and obviously they can't easily enjoy it. Am I right? Saint Etienne - Tales From Turnpike House

Since 2002 the English trio Saint Etienne had remained quiet, their last album Finisterre is a great one but this January they've released Tales from Turnpike House and it is forged by a perfect selection of commercial and not commercial tracks, like other Saint Etienne releases it has their elegant trademark, if you've liked any other work by Saint Etienne I'm sure that you're going to really enjoy this one, mostly every track in the disc has a pop sound, but the arrangements, programming and orchestration are accurately done, this combination of items is a good example of how an album could be both commercial and full of high-quality music. Without a doubt you must own Tales from Turnpike House not only for the outstanding music, the artwork of the CD is pretty cool as well, all of this facts turn out this selection to be our February album of the month.

According to Fetish Recordings Mario Fabriani might be the oldest house music producer alive today, The past life of this man could easily be the plot of a nice mafia movie. After commiting a very serious crime in his teens Mario was sentenced to a 50 year term in an Italian prison. In this enormous period of time, he changed his life in a very radical way including becoming a buddhist. At 68 years old he was released from prison. Mario started going out to clubs to focus in other things and soon he discovered house music. Steve Reich-Future in the Past

Steve Reich was recently called "America's greatest living composer." (by The Village Voice). He is though the most original musical thinker of our time. According to this statement his unrepeatable genious not only has contributed to create a style that was misunderstood as Minimalism at the end of 60's, he has also exposed another way to appreciate music, His music is so rich, inventive and organic that the common listener can't understand, his harmony, his orchestration and the meters he uses (more than 7/8s) are too complex to be listened in any given Sunday.
Therefore I suggest that you should listen to his music as timming layers. In his work he includes diferent kinds of mallets, violins, marimbas, percusions, voices, organs, etcetera, for this among with other reasons the cacophony that is formed turns in a extraordinary sinergy of time and space, that's why some of the work of Reich was used on Three Tales, a three-part digital documentary video opera. I venture to say that Steve Reich influenced artists of the status of Kronos Quartet, Philip Glass or, why not?, even Björk. Now I dare you to click here and change your perception of music

Our mission today is trying to make an unpopular list of the most propositive albums, I mean, their sound may be a turning point for the future or, at least, they're different. Somebody once ask me, what the hell is that machine with loads of buttons? How can I program it? Does it serve me some coffee in the morning? or what? Come on, I said, the TR 808 is a very friendly drum machine, and of course it does drum patterns which make percussion sounds, duh... In fact you can play with something similar here in this site, there you can drag and drop. The samples available and you can create your own patterns, and mix them up in a sequencer, maybe they aren't the greatetest samples, but they are a good example of how a drum machine actually works. Kelley Polar - Love Songs of the Hanging Gardens

This multidisciplinary artist with an impressive knowledge of classical music, made the switch to electronic music in the early '80s, after some performances with orchestras he moved to New York City where he met Morgan Geist, he colaborated with him in his first record as Metro Area, in a self titled album with only a few chords, nevertheless the participation of Polar was very evident, since he and Metro Area built up a unique post-disco style. In november of 2005 Kelley Polar realeased his first solo album "Love Songs of the Hanging Gardens" Maybe I could describe it as a pop album, but at the same time is too opressive for a pop album, however this debut is rich and complex in sounds and with changing musical structures, that's why we definitely can name this one as album of the month. Challenge for this 2006

This challenge is easy, you will have to explore new sounds, new genres, even new artists, maybe if you open now your music library, you will see that you have a lot of music, but mostly one kind of music only, I mean that media, TV and radio are strong beacause they only offer popular music all the time. For some people a change is something to be scared of, but change is good. If you listen to all kinds of music as much as you can, you have more resources to buy, listen or even to compose music. A good example of this is Hanne Hukkelberg beacause this is not pop or electronica, but a timeless mix of all, So you are not listening to a kind of music only... 120 Years of Electronic Music

Is almost impossible to believe the fact that the instruments and machines involved in electronic music, are more than 120 years old. here you will see the complete list and an evolution explanation of them, This evolution is divided in 4 steps: 1870-1915: Early Experiments 1915-1960: The Vacuum Tube Era. 1960-1980: Integrated Circuits. 1980-present: The Digital Revolution. Some of this instruments have funny names like The celluphone and The variophone. Surfing this web page I found this interesting story: "Elisha Gray would have been known to us as the inventor of the telephone if Alexander Graham bell hadn't got to the patent office one hour before him" nevertheless Elisha Gray accidentaly contributed with electronic music, because he built The Musical Telegraph in (1876) using electromagnetic circuits and a single note oscillator. Max Mathews a.k.a "The father of computer music" predicts that by 2010, "almost all music will be made electronically, by digital circuits." Kid Koala was born in Vancouver in 1974, when he was just 12 years old he discovered the sound of scratch on his sister's record player, he began saving money to buy his first turntable set, after many successful presentations in night clubs he signed with Ninja Tune in 1995, now with only 21 years of age, after recording his first album he opened shows from artists like Radiohead and Gorillaz. This magnificent artist is not only a good dj, he is producer, a piano player, and even a great graphite illustrator, it is hard to explain exaclty what Kid Koala does as he's mixing, because he incorporates turntables as if they were any other instrument, I mean he can scratch the records with such ease that you can even hear a saxophone-like sound only with him scratching. Hidden treasures from Japan

One of the most prolific producers from Japan "Towa Tei" released his last album "Flash" this album offers a rich and fine sound gamma, mainly beacuse of the participation of artists like Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kylie Minogue, Luomo and Buffalo Daughter.Genres like Bossa Nova, Jazz, and House are blended by the unique electronic style of "Towa Tei". In The Flasher Tour created by "Towa Tei", Jazztronic was one of the djs who opened the presentations, he is another innovating pianist, producer and dj, some of his material is full of break-beats, jazz, house and even 2step, he probably is one of best exponents in the Japanese House Scene. Muna Zul - Muna Zul

Released in 2003, it was not only obviuosly missed by the media in Mexico but elsewhere, Muna Zul self titled production is a great album. The Japanese and American producing duo formed by Kazunori Sugiyama and avant-garde musician John Zorn, through Tzadik, Zorn's label, singned the Mexico City trio formed by Dora Juárez, Leika Mochán and Sandra Cuevas. The beautiful female a cappella sounds explore a wide spectrum of genres that goes from doo wop and hip-hop to jazz and Mexican folk, achieving this without sounding out of their own style and making it a delicious experience. TR 808 is Back

This incredible drum machine was the first to use digital samples and programming, some musicians on '80s started using The Roland TR 808 in their productions, like 808 State, Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, Beastie Boys even Whitney Houston, some of them never thought 808 would be used in 2006, there is no doubt this one is a timeless drum machine, actually 808 is used for electronica, house, acid house, electroclash, and a lot more genres, you can listen the latest Chicken Lips album "Clicks, Acid 'n' Disco" this one is a perfect example of how you can use 808 in an renewed way. If you prefer Electro you should listen the new material of Swayzak is a good example as well. you can download a sample here to help you identify this sound.

Nu:Tone Brave nu World

The recomendation of this month is Nu:Tone-Brave nu World. This album is not the classic drum & bass album, songs are happier than the usual dark atmospheres om other D&B albums, definitely Dan Gresham aka Nu:Tone has a strong influence of house music, The Remix of Lenny Fontana is awesome, he knows how to make an excellent union between drum & bass and house in an elegant mode. If you like this album you should hear this guy DJ Patife
